By Anke Zimmermann, BSc, FCAH Autism and Antibiotics? In April of 2013 I received a call from the mother of one of my little autistic patients: "Owen's eye contact has gone from one second to several minutes at times! I’m actually almost a bit uncomfortable with the intensity of his gaze now." Not only that, but he learned to use the word ‘no’ and was trying to say other words, all major improvements after only eight weeks of treatment with homeopathy and isotheray. Owen, an adorable three-and-a-half-year-old boy, was born healthy and strong but started to show changes in his health after intensive IV and oral antibiotic therapy at only nine weeks old. Regression by 16 MonthsSigns of regression were noted by about 16 months, preceded more antibiotics. He began toe-walking, started banging his head on the floor when angry and lost the eight to ten words he already had one by one until he couldn’t even say ‘uh-oh’ anymore. A sadly familiar story for many parents of children diagnosed with autism. Owen had already been on a gluten, casein and soy-free diet from 24 months old which helped him to sleep through the night and reduced his hyperactive behaviour. He was also given numerous supplements as well as courses of Fluconazole, Nystatin and Valacyclovir which helped temporarily. The family recently switched to the GAPS diet which somewhat improved his sleep, eye contact and behaviour. ABA Therapy for Eye ContactHe also had intensive ABA therapy for the past five months. "The eye contact is something we've been targeting with ABA since November of 2012 for 12 hours a week", the mother reported. "He was expected to look for at least "1-Mississippi" each time we called his name." "His success rate with this was about 30% until about the beginning of April when it suddenly jumped to 80%, for several seconds at a time, where it has remained. Recently he has been turning almost every time we call and on several occasions has sustained eye contact for over a minute." PolyantibioticumThis dramatic change was noted after only two weeks on Polyantibioticum, a homeopathic remedy made from several antibiotics. He has steadily improved since then. Owen had never been vaccinated, so the intensive antibiotic therapy stood out in his case. The fact that he responded so strongly to this remedy pointed to the antibiotics as having contributed to his autism.
gut flora potentially indefinitely. There is increasing research linking altered gut flora to autism and many other disorders. Not only are antibiotics overused in human medicine, the majority of them are used on lifestock. In 2016 alone the US used about 80% of all antibiotics on livestock, about 40 million pounds. Antibiotics are used to prevent and treat infections in lifestock and also to increase growth and fattening. We don't know how consuming antibiotic-fed meat and milk can affect children. One Month Later"Owen is now making eye contact 100% of the time and he has also started to play with toys for the first time over the past week. The ABA therapists have even stopped doing eye contact trials!" His sleep is much better and he is now eating a wider variety of food, with less adherence to the GAPS diet, without any problems. He is playing with his toys for the first time ever, before he just looked at them or gathered them into a heap. He is playing with trains appropriately for long periods of time. His toe walking has improved but some old behaviours such as head banging and spinning have returned a bit. He is really making an effort to speak. Plan: Polyantibioticum 30CH twice a week for two weeks. Two Months after Initial AssessmentOwen's mother has just attended the Autism One Conference in Chicago. There was a presentation on homeopathy for autism and she reported that it was the most inspiring and hopeful presentation there, with many parents standing up and tearfully sharing how their children had been healed with homeopathy after trying diet, ABA and other methods. Owen is continuing to improve and is now using the toilet for the first time; three times over the last week in fact. One one occasion the mother noticed several dead, big white worms, 2-3" long in his stool as well as pinworms in the toilet water! His stools are really improving overall. Eye contact has been great and the teacher at the play school is reporting that Owen is doing phenomenally well in the last three weeks and that he seem so happy lately. In the last two days he has been frowning and scowling at random times, then he giggles. Mom thinks that he is trying out his facial muscles. Assessment: Strange but hopeful development with elimination of dead worms. Plan: Polyantibioticum 200CH twice a week, Cina 6CH once a day for the parasites. Three Months after Initial AssessmentOwen has continued to eliminate lots of worms! Every two days in fact. He also passed an extremely large fluffy, yellow stool like the ones he passed when he was treated for yeast last year. After the last dose of polyantibioticum 200CH he had a horrible day, not complying with anything, having tantrums on the floor and not interested in any activities. The day after he was much better again. He is still using the toilet, still playing well and now has started to shake his head yes and no in response to questions appropriately for the first time. He is waving good-bye consistently now and will look people in the eye while saying good-bye. He is babbling lots and using gestures and is now running to put on his shoes when asked if he wants to go outside. He is still playing with his facial expression. Stimming behaviour has almost cleared now and he is really trying hard to speak. Plan: Polyantibioticum 1M for two weeks, then 10 M for two weeks. No More Toe-Walking or SpinningFour months into treatment we now were on Poly 10M. With the first dose "he went crazy again, running down halls opening and closing doors and laughing like crazy." He can eat so many more things now, this is one of the best changes. Mom has added a couple more supplements for the parasites, diotomaceaous earth and Neem. He can say 'more' and 'anana' now, he is working hard to pronounce it, such a challenge for him. He is sleeping really well. He used to have extreme responses to bananas and used to start spinning, laughing and tripping all over the place. "No more toe walking or spinning over the last three weeks at all! We are so happy about this!" Lots of people have commented on how calm and engaged he is and how long he can look at them. Improvement of Allergies"He used to get huge welts from mosquito bites since birth. In the last two weeks he's had several bites and they just went away." "He turned around spontaneously and waved good-bye - huge success, we've been trying to teach him this for a year!" Still much more pointing, lots of babbling. Still playing with his facial expression. He is starting to play with his toys in a more imaginative way, the therapist told them this is a very good sign. Plan: Repeat Polyantibioticum clearing again. Toe-walking 90% improvedFive months after the initial assessment he is "Just fine with Poly 30 and 200CH. With each dose the next day he babbles more, amazing. With 1 M goes crazy. With 10M he had a terrible sleep for two nights and was quite irritable." Toe-walking is 90-90% improved, it had completely disappeared for a while. Bowels and words are same, good. Suddenly he is showing interest in toileting. His understanding - receptive language - is much better. Now he lets caregivers know if he has to pee. Eating has been really good. Plan: Repeat Polyantioticum clearing again Six Months after beginning of TreatmentAgain did well with Poly 30 and 200CH. Then started preschool, was very sick for 10 days. Mother's plan is to start 2 weeks of 1M on Monday. After this time the family was lost to follow-up. Still, a very nice Polyantibioticum case I think. It was especially useful that in this case this child had never been vaccinated, so the autism was linked only to the antibiotics and possibly the fluoride dental treatment. This child dramatically improved on all parameters of his autism and for a very small cost. A whole vial of a homeopathic remedy costs only about $8.00, he had four vials. I've seen very similar cases of children whose parents noted them regressing into autism from vaccines. Then again, almost all vaccines contain antibiotics so maybe this is where some of the similarities come from. Anke Zimmermann, Classical Homeopath, Sooke, BC.
