By Anke Zimmermann, BSc, FCAH Homeopathy for TeethingErica, age 15 months, is having trouble with her ears. She has been tugging on them for the past three months, since her molars started to erupt. For some reason the tissue is just bulging but the teeth are not able to come through and all this is causing a great deal of congestion and distress for little Erica. She has been waking up screaming about 80% of the time over the past six months, probably because she is in pain. Apparently the molars are coming in sideways. She has had difficulties with her other teeth as well. A 'Spirited' ChildErica is described as 'spirited' by her mother. She does not like being coerced into things and has definite likes and dislikes for things and people. She can be stubborn and short-tempered, as well as persistent and very independent. "She is interested in anything you tell her not to touch," his mother reports. This is often a good clue for the homeopathic remedy Tuberculinum. Children who benefit from this remedy can be extraordinarily persistent and even malicious, intentionally disobeying and doing exactly the opposite of what is being asked of them. She does not like a set schedule but does things on her own time. Diaper changes can be challenging, she hates to be held down. Tuberculinum and Dental IssuesI have selected Tuberculinum frequently with both chronic infections as well as teething issues. Sometimes the teeth will come in all crowded and this remedy actually straightens them out quite a bit, it's remarkable to see. Erica was congested with sticky, green mucous for the first six weeks of her life. She perspires around the head, loves to eat old cheddar cheese, yogurt and bread and is averse to potatoes and meat. I selected Tuberculinum 200CH as well as Kali-mur 6D, a tissue salt historically useful for congestion of the Eustachian tubes and Calc-phos 6D, a tissue salt traditionally used to help with dentition and growth. Follow-up Within three days her ears were getting better and she no longer woke up screaming in the mornings. She has needed a few doses of Tuberculinum to help her with her teething and her ears. One could have only given a local remedy for teething but it would not have worked as well as the constitutional treatment. Parents often use over-the-counter homeopathic teething remedies, sometimes without success. In the latter cases a constitutional remedy may be more successful. If you know someone whose child has difficulty with teething please let them know about homeopathy! Questions? I offer a 15-minute free discovery session
