By Anke Zimmermann, BSc, FCAH Anorexia, Anxiety and OCD After VaccinationsA study published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Psychiatry on January 19, 2017, and conducted by researchers from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and the Yale Study Centre at the Yale University School of Medicine [1] has discovered some preliminary, but disturbing findings that could show a connection between recent vaccination and the development of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. In particular, the study found a possible association between vaccination and the development of anorexia nervosa (AN), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorder (AD) and chronic tic disorder in a subgroup of vulnerable individuals. Girl Develops OCD and Anorexia Immediately After Vaccination As a practitioner working with vaccine injured individuals, I am not at all surprised by these findings, as I have seen them in clinical practice quite often. I am relieved that someone is actually looking at scientific data to substantiate what many parents have said for years. As an example, the teenage daughter of one of my friends, never vaccinated, was accepted into a prestigious private school years ago, but asked to be fully vaccinated up to date to attend. Shortly after receiving the required vaccines the young girl developed fairly severe anorexia nervosa and OCD. She was unable to complete the program and is still suffering from these conditions ten years later, in fact, she is on disability as a result. I was thrilled to find this study as it helped the young woman and her family to understand that she suffered a physical injury, a poisoning if you will, and not a mental or emotional defect. Years of counselling have not helped much. The Immune System and Brain Development The study explained that there is a considerable body of scientific evidence indicating that the immune system plays a key role in normal brain development and in the pathobiology of several neuropsychiatric disorders, in particular obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, tic disorders, ADHD, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Vaccines influence the immune system and have therefor been considered as possible contributors to the development of such conditions. Analyzing five years' worth of private health insurance data on children ages 6-15, the researchers found that children and adolescents ages 6-15 vaccinated in the previous three to 12 months were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with some of these neuropsychiatric disorders than their non-vaccinated counterparts. 95,000 Children’s Medical Records Analyzed More than 95,000 children in the database that were analyzed had one of seven neuropsychiatric disorders: anorexia nervosa, anxiety disorder, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorder. Children with these disorders were compared to children without neuropsychiatric disorders, as well as to children with two other conditions that could not possibly be related to vaccination: open wounds and broken bones. This was a well-designed, tightly controlled study. Control subjects without brain disorders were matched with the subjects by age, geographic location and gender. As expected, broken bones and open wounds showed no significant association with vaccinations. Data Base for Study Data were obtained from the MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounter database and data from 2002-2007 were used for the study. MarketScan consists of de-identified, reimbursed health-care claims for employees, retirees and their dependents of over 250 medium and large employers and health plans, in other words, individuals were covered by private health care plans for a total of about 56 million covered lives per year. Vaccinated Children 80% more likely to be diagnosed with Anorexia, 25% more likely to be diagnosed with OCD Children who had been vaccinated were 80 percent more likely to be diagnosed with anorexia and 25 percent more likely to be diagnosed with OCDthan their non-vaccinated counterparts. Vaccinated children were also more likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and with tics compared to the controls. New cases of major depression, bipolar disorder or ADHD showed no significant association with vaccinations however. The influenza vaccine seemed to be of particular concern. In this study, influenza vaccination was strongly correlated with both anorexia and OCD. Multi-dose flu vaccines still contain thimerosal, a mercury-containing compound, which may be a contributor to these findings perhaps. The study also mentioned that ‘the observed association between the antecedent administration of the influenza vaccine and the new onset of AN and OCD may suggest that aberrant immune functioning may be a common pathogenetic pathway for OCD and AN.’ Correlation between autoimmune disorders in eating disorders, comorbidity of OCD and autoimmune diseases Furthermore ‘In addition, the increased risk for autoimmune disorders (such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, Crohn’s disease, and celiac disease) in eating disorders (and the documented comorbidity of OCD and autoimmune diseases (such as systemic lupus erythematosus, thyroid dysfunction, and multiple sclerosis) indicate the possible shared host factors and the role of immune-mediated mechanisms in the development of AN and OCD.’ Clinical Observation In my practice I have certainly seen an association between eating disorders, usually very picky eating, anxiety and OCD. This is often called autism.
Most children diagnosed with autism have food and eating issues and suffer from rigid, OCD and repetitive behaviours.
